Mt Fuji is Japan's highest and most famous peak, standing at an altitude of 3,776 metres. There is a Japanese saying that if you climb Mt Fuji once, you are a wise man, but that only a fool would do it twice. Many Japanese dream of standing on the summit at least once in their lifetime and Mt. Fuji is visited by some 300,000 climbers every year. The mountain officially opens only from the beginning of July to the end of August.
